Testing Vermiculite for Asbestos nationwide

Test Vermiculite for Asbestos in Your Home or Business With RPF Environmental’s Affordable Asbestos Testing Services

Over 70% of vermiculite used in homes in the United States is contaminated by asbestos – a carcinogenic mineral that can lead to untreatable diseases after long-term exposure. Vermiculite insulation is commonly found in residential attics and sold under the brand Zonolite. Although it rarely poses a risk when undisturbed, old and damaged vermiculite insulation can expose your family to toxic airborne fibers.

RPF Environmental can help you ensure your family’s safety through our vermiculite testing services in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and other areas across the United States. We also offer residential and commercial asbestos testing for other building materials.

What You Need to Know About Vermiculite Insulation Testing

What is Vermiculite?

Vermiculite is a natural mineral that is odorless, fire-resistant, and lightweight which makes it ideal for use in building materials. Among its popular uses were for wall and attic insulation in homes. More than 70% of vermiculite sold in the U.S. from 1919 to 1990 came from a mine near Libby, Montana which contained asbestos deposits. This contaminated the vermiculite which was used in many homes under the brand name Zonolite.

So if your home contains vermiculite insulation, you should always assume that it is from Libby and you should treat it as asbestos-containing. Avoid disturbing the materials to prevent further exposure.

Health Risks of Exposure to Asbestos-Contaminated Vermiculite Insulation

EPA has stated that there is no known safe level of asbestos exposure, so you need to avoid exposure as much as possible. Damaged or disturbed vermiculite insulation, along with other asbestos materials, will release microscopic fibers into the air that can’t be detected by smell or sight. This means that you can be inhaling toxic asbestos fibers unknowingly which increases your risk of developing deadly cancers, especially with repeated exposure.

Exposure to vermiculite insulation can cause the following diseases:

The best way to avoid exposure is to avoid disturbing the material. If you think you’ve been exposed to asbestos, consult with your doctor.

NOTE:

  • Exposure can also happen during renovation and demolition works. Thus, it is important to have the building tested first before doing any construction activity to prevent exposure.
  • Asbestos diseases mostly emerge 10 to 50 years after exposure when they have already become impossible to treat.
  • Smoking increases your risk of developing asbestos diseases.

How to Test Vermiculite for Asbestos

Since you can’t see, smell, or taste asbestos, visual inspection won’t be enough to identify asbestos products. Only a certified professional can accurately test and identify asbestos through sample collection and laboratory testing. But with vermiculite insulation, it typically looks like rocky gravel (pebble-like) in gray-brown, silvery gray, or silvery gold colors.

Also, you can check the material brand if it is Zonolite. Although not all vermiculite materials contain asbestos, always treat them as asbestos-contaminated and avoid disturbing them.
