What to Know About OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Training

What Are Bloodborne Pathogens?

OSHA defined bloodborne pathogens as infectious microorganisms in our blood such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi that can cause severe and even life-threatening diseases. Examples are HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B (HBV), and Hepatitis C (HCV). These pathogens are often transmitted through exposure to contaminated blood and bodily fluids via sharps-related injuries like needlestick injuries.

What Is Blood Pathogen Training?

BBP training is designed to comply with the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens standard. This federal regulation imposed requirements on employers regarding the provision of proper training to their employees who may get exposed to OPIMs including blood. It includes the best practices on how workers can protect themselves from exposure to harmful bodily fluids. Thus, preventing or minimizing the workers’ risk of getting exposed to these infectious microorganisms.

Moreover, bloodborne pathogens training must be provided to the employees before they start working with OPIMs. Aside from training, the standard also requires employers to establish exposure control plans as well as engineering and work practice controls to minimize exposure and handle incidents.

How Often Is Bloodborne Pathogens Training Required?

Annual BBP training is required for all employees with potential exposure to blood/OPIM regardless of their education or prior training. Additional training should also be provided when changes have been made to procedures or tasks in which new exposures might have been created.

How Long Is OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Training Good For?

BBP training certifications are only valid for one year which is why annual training is required.

Types of Workers Who Need BBP Training: Do You Need Bloodborne Pathogen Training?

OSHA regulations mandate bloodborne pathogens training for workers who are at risk of coming into contact with BBPs such as:

  • Healthcare workers
  • Doctors
  • Nurses
  • Medical assistants
  • Pharmacists
  • Researchers
  • Lab technicians
  • Emergency responders
  • Correctional officers
  • School personnel
  • Childcare workers
  • Janitorial staff
  • Security guards
  • Hotel housekeepers

How Much Does Bloodborne Pathogen Training Cost?

BBP training certifications usually range from around $25 to $30. Some offer group discounts for organizations whose employees take BBP training for compliance purposes.
