We at RPF Environmental salute HNTB, an infrastructure solutions firm, for recently being awarded the silver Engineering Excellence award by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts for the Whittier Bridge (I-95) Improvement Project in Amesbury, MA. You can view the details of that award here. As with many of the projects in which RPF Environmental participates, we are always pleased to see the resulting positive outcomes. And, it was such a thrill to finally drive over the beautiful and newly constructed bridge!
While this project has provided the public with much improved traffic patterns and a new shared-use path for pedestrians and bikers, we also had to say good-bye to the old Whittier Bridge. Mass DOT shared this image of the last lone vehicle driving across the old bridge.
We often find ourselves involved in demolition projects: tearing down the original and building the new. In the case of the old Whittier Bridge in Amesbury, we did paint sampling for lead, since de-leading of the steel structure was required prior to cutting the bridge into pieces. As well, we provided industrial hygiene services including waste characterization, air sampling, and surface testing during the work.
So, a big congratulations to HNTB for their work on the replacement of the Whittier Bridge in Amesbury, and to all the other companies and institutions that played a role in this important project.
