What Is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a group of six naturally occurring mineral fibers. The following are six types of asbestos mineral fibers:

Tremolite asbestos
Actinolite asbestos
Chrysotile asbestos
Amosite asbestos
Anthophyllite asbestos
Crocidolite asbestos

Asbestos was so commonly used as a building material because of it’s durability. It is heat-resistant and immune to corrosion. However, it was later discovered that if asbestos particles are inhaled, they can cause severe health problems, including mesothelioma cancer.

When Do I Need an Asbestos Test?

There’s a possibility that asbestos is in the building you’re in now. There was never a US ban on products containing asbestos. Therefore, your vinyl flooring, shingles, or floor tiles could contain asbestos, even if they’re brand new. Fortunately, asbestos only poses a health risk if it’s inhaled. Modern products that contain asbestos are generally sealed tight, meaning the asbestos in them hasn’t escaped and hasn’t compromised your health.

Unfortunately, while some forms of asbestos-containing products are relatively safe, asbestos still poses a danger to people if it’s not properly contained. If there are areas in a building you’re occupying that are older, or where the building materials are wearing down or crumbling, such as in an attic, it is probably a good idea to have an asbestos test done. In addition, when remodeling or demolition projects are taking place, an asbestos test should be conducted to ensure that no one is being exposed to asbestos during the process.
