Asbestos Removal

RPF Environmental Has Been Proudly Serving Clients in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York, and Nationwide Since 1991

Asbestos is extremely dangerous. Studies have found a definitive connection between inhaling asbestos fibers and developing mesothelioma, which is a form of cancer that is almost always fatal. Asbestos was once widely used in the construction of products and buildings. A few of the most common ways asbestos was used include:

  • Walls
  • Automobile manufacturing
  • Floor tiles
  • Roofing
  • Pipes
  • Electrical components
  • Cement

Due to the health risks that asbestos poses, it is no longer used in the construction of most products or buildings. While asbestos usage has dropped significantly, unfortunately, there are still products and buildings containing asbestos all around us. Slowly but surely products containing asbestos are being properly disposed of and asbestos is being removed from buildings.

At RPF Environmental, we understand the danger that asbestos still poses, and we work to ensure that asbestos is found and removed. Since 1991, RPF Environmental has been a trusted and leading provider of asbestos testing and surveying services in Maine, New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and throughout the US. We provide the following asbestos testing and surveying services:

  • Asbestos assessment
  • Remediation design, bid, and contract administration
  • Litigation support
  • Waste characterization
  • Accredited laboratory analysis
  • Air, water, and surface dust testing and analysis

What Is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a group of six naturally occurring mineral fibers. The following are six types of asbestos mineral fibers:

  • Tremolite asbestos
  • Actinolite asbestos
  • Chrysotile asbestos
  • Amosite asbestos
  • Anthophyllite asbestos
  • Crocidolite asbestos

Asbestos was so commonly used as a building material because of it’s durability. It is heat-resistant and immune to corrosion. However, it was later discovered that if asbestos particles are inhaled, they can cause severe health problems, including mesothelioma cancer.

When Do I Need an Asbestos Test?

There’s a possibility that asbestos is in the building you’re in now. There was never a US ban on products containing asbestos. Therefore, your vinyl flooring, shingles, or floor tiles could contain asbestos, even if they’re brand new. Fortunately, asbestos only poses a health risk if it’s inhaled. Modern products that contain asbestos are generally sealed tight, meaning the asbestos in them hasn’t escaped and hasn’t compromised your health.

Unfortunately, while some forms of asbestos-containing products are relatively safe, asbestos still poses a danger to people if it’s not properly contained. If there are areas in a building you’re occupying that are older, or where the building materials are wearing down or crumbling, such as in an attic, it is probably a good idea to have an asbestos test done. In addition, when remodeling or demolition projects are taking place, an asbestos test should be conducted to ensure that no one is being exposed to asbestos during the process.

If asbestos is found during the asbestos testing or surveying process, asbestos removal (also known as asbestos abatement) is generally the best option. For more information on asbestos removal, read our blog about the asbestos abatement process.
