Asbestos
was used in many different kinds of building materials such as
insulations, resilient flooring, plasters, ceiling tiles, roofing,
siding, adhesives and many other materials. However, excessive exposure
to asbestos can lead to several serious diseases including asbestosis,
lung cancer, mesothelioma, and other asbestos-related illnesses.
In addition to the concerns for personal exposures to asbestos,
the presence of asbestos can also result in significant financial
and legal liabilities and disruption to businesses operations, renovation
or facility maintenance activity, demolition, and real estate development.
To avoid possible health risks and costly disruptions to business,
the first step is identification and assessment. It is important
to note that just because asbestos may be present, it doesn't necessarily
mean that it must be removed. In fact it may only require some form
of abatement if the materials are damaged or if the asbestos will
be affected by some form of renovation, demolition, or other facility
maintenance activity that will results in a disturbance to the asbestos.
